As a teenager growing up I used to be overweight and this made my life very difficult. I had a lot of trouble growing up since most of my age mates used to tease me a lot about my weight. This really affected my self confidence and how I viewed life. It was very difficult to even approach a girl since I was very insecure about my weight. I was very lonely and it seemed that everyone was enjoying there life apart from me. It is a fact that not one wants to be tied down in a relationship with a person who has serious esteem issues. All the girls were interested with members of our school football team and I guess the main reason was because they had a lot of self confidence. The lack of confidence was also reflected in my grades in that I started flanking in my exams and that was when I knew I had to do something.
By the time I was sixteen I knew I had to change my life and what better way than to lose weight. I seriously considered using steroids in order to lose weight until I discovered some of the side effects which included; in men: low sperm count, decrease in libido or sex drive, the testicles shrink, loss of hair, insomnia, depression, in women: enlargement of the clitoris, growth of facial hair, loss of hair, liver conditions, heart conditions, depression, insomnia, kidney problems and increased levels of aggression. I used to go on a fad diets which never resulted to any progress. You should also avoid fad diets when losing weight because they will make you gain weight instead. When you use fad diets your body will go into starvation mode. When the body is in starvation mode it will start burning muscles instead of fat so that it can be able to preserve energy. You will therefore start losing muscles and this will cause your body metabolism to slow down.
When your body metabolism slows down you will gain weight because you will not be able to burn more calories as you used to. The increase in weight will also come as a result of the increase in fat which is not being consumed when the body is in starvation mode. Through my research I came to discover that they key to losing weight was to do aerobic exercises, weight training exercises and a proper and balanced meal. The reason why you should eat a proper diet is because it will prevent the body from going into starvation mode. Aerobic exercises are also good because they help increase a person’s metabolisms which also lead to the burning of more calories. The other facet needed to lose weight is weight training exercises which lead to the increase in lean body muscles. As a result of the increase in muscles your metabolism also increases and you are able to burn more calories. Once you develop a proper body physique you will be able to increase your self confidence and self esteem which will help you discover yourself.
